The Skin Treatment You’ve Been Waiting For (IPL Photofacial!) Is Now at The Luminary

I'll be honest with you: I have been wanting to add this treatment to The Luminary for a lonnnngggg time. Now that we have it, I cannot stop talking about it. It truly feels like Christmas over here!!

We just added an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device to our treatment menu, and it is genuinely one of the most exciting things to happen at The Lum in a while. If you've ever looked in the mirror and felt frustrated by sun spots, redness, uneven skin tone, or that general "my skin looks tired even though I'm not", this is the treatment I want you to know about.

Let me tell you everything!

What Is IPL, Exactly?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It's a light-based skin treatment that uses broad-spectrum light energy delivered in pulses to target specific concerns in the skin. Unlike a laser, which uses a single focused wavelength, IPL emits multiple wavelengths simultaneously, which allows it to treat a wide range of skin concerns in a single session.

The light energy is absorbed by pigment (brown spots, sun damage) and by the hemoglobin in blood vessels (redness, broken capillaries, rosacea). When that energy is absorbed, it heats and breaks down those target cells. Your body then naturally clears them away, revealing clearer, more even skin underneath.

I know it sounds intense, but it’s not! It is one of the most well-tolerated skin treatments we offer, with little to zero downtime for most patients.

What Can IPL Treat?

This is where it gets exciting, because the answer is a lot. IPL is one of the most versatile skin treatments available, and our device gives us the ability to customize treatments for multiple concerns and skin types. Here's what we can target:

Sun damage and brown spots. Those flat, brown patches that show up after years of sun exposure - IPL is exceptionally good at breaking these down and fading them significantly.

Redness and rosacea. If you deal with persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, or a rosacea diagnosis, IPL targets the hemoglobin in those vessels and reduces redness dramatically over a series of treatments.

Uneven skin tone. When your skin just looks blotchy or inconsistent in color, IPL brings everything back into balance.

Freckles and age spots. Whether you love your freckles or you've decided you're done with them, IPL can lighten or fade them.

Dull, lackluster skin. Beyond targeting specific spots or redness, IPL stimulates collagen production, which means improved texture, skin quality, and that overall luminous quality we're always chasing.

Fine lines and texture. Regular IPL treatments over time have a cumulative collagen-building effect that improves skin quality on a deeper level than most topical products ever could.

Hair removal. IPL is also one of the most effective methods for long-term hair reduction on the face and body.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IPL?

IPL works best on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types I-III) because the technology targets contrast between the pigment or vessel and the surrounding skin. It is not appropriate for all skin tones, and we will always do a thorough consultation before treating to make sure IPL is safe and right for you.

You are a great candidate if you have fair to medium skin with sun damage, redness, brown spots, or rosacea. You are not a candidate if you are currently tan, have recently used self-tanner, are taking certain photosensitizing medications, are pregnant, or have active skin infections in the treatment area.

When you come in for a consultation, we assess your skin type, your concerns, your history, and your goals. We do not treat anyone who isn't a safe and appropriate candidate.

What Does an IPL Treatment Feel Like?

Most patients describe it as a quick snapping or warm flicking sensation as the light pulses are delivered. Some areas are more sensitive than others, bony areas and spots close to the eyes tend to feel more intense than fleshier areas. We use protective eyewear throughout the treatment and move through the face systematically.

The whole treatment typically takes 30 minutes or less depending on the areas being treated. Most patients walk out with mild redness that resembles a light sunburn, which usually fades within a few hours. There is no required downtime, though we do have some aftercare guidelines to follow.

One thing to know going in: if you're treating brown spots, they will often get temporarily darker in the days immediately following treatment before they flake or fade away. This is called the "peppering" effect and it is completely normal and expected. That darkening means it's working.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

It depends on what you're treating and the severity of your concerns. For most patients, a series of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is needed for satisfactory results.

We'll give you a realistic picture at your consultation of what to expect and how many sessions we think will get you to your goal. We're not in the business of overselling you a package you don't need.

What Does Aftercare Look Like?

IPL aftercare is pretty straightforward. Here's what to expect and what to do:

Avoid direct sun exposure for at least two weeks after treatment, and always wear SPF 30 or higher. This is non-negotiable. Fresh post-IPL skin is more susceptible to sun damage, and skipping sunscreen undoes your results. Wear a hat if you're going to be outside.

Skip active skincare ingredients for a few days. Hold off on retinol, exfoliants, and any harsh skincare products for 3-5 days post-treatment while your skin recovers.

Don't pick. If you have darkened spots that are starting to flake, let them fall off on their own. Picking accelerates the process but also increases your risk of irritation or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Stay out of saunas, steam rooms, and intense heat for 48 hours after treatment.

Moisturize, be gentle, and give your skin a little grace while it’s healing.

How Is This Different From a Regular Facial or Chemical Peel?

Facials and chemical peels work primarily on the surface of the skin, they exfoliate, cleanse, and brighten the outermost layers. They're fantastic treatments and we love them too.

IPL works differently. It bypasses the surface and delivers energy deeper into the skin to target pigment and vessels at their source. It addresses things that no amount of exfoliation or topical treatment can touch, like the brown spot that's been sitting on your cheek for ten years despite every brightening serum you've tried.

The two approaches complement each other beautifully. Many of our patients combine IPL with our VI Chemical Peels or HydraFacial treatments for a comprehensive skin rejuvenation plan. Your provider can help you build a routine that makes sense for your skin and your goals.

Why Are We So Excited About This?

Because for years patients have come to us wanting something for their skin beyond injectables. They want to address the sun damage from their 20s, the redness that makes them feel self-conscious, the skin tone inconsistency that no filter can actually fix. And while we've always had great options, adding an IPL gives us a whole new level of ability to treat the skin itself, not just the structure beneath it.

This is a medical device-level treatment. That means the results are in a completely different category from anything you can do at home or get at a standard facial bar. This is clinical and precise. And in the hands of our trained, licensed providers, it is incredibly effective.

We are laser-focused (pun fully intended) on getting you results. This treatment is a big part of that.

Come in for a consultation and let's take a look at what IPL can do for you. We're genuinely excited about this one and we can't wait to show you what it does.
