Botox 101: Everything You've Been Too Afraid to Ask (But Totally Should)
Let's be real. You've been thinking about Botox for a while. Maybe you've Googled it at 11 PM. Maybe you've stared at someone's forehead at a party and thought, “wait, did she...?” Maybe your mom is horrified by the concept and your best friend swears by it. Maybe you've just noticed that your "11s" (those little vertical lines between your brows) are settling in and not leaving.
Whatever brought you here, welcome. Let's clear the air.
So, What Actually IS Botox?
Botox is a neuromodulator. It's a purified protein derived from botulinum toxin (it sounds scary, but I promise it’s not) that, when injected in small, precise amounts, temporarily relaxes the muscle it's placed in. That's it. When a muscle can't contract as forcefully, it can't crease the skin above it. No crease = No wrinkle. Girl math!
There are several brands on the market: Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify and Jeuveau. They all work similarly - Think of them as Coke vs Pepsi vs Sprite vs Any other soda brand. At The Luminary, we carry both Botox and Dysport, and your provider will walk you through which one makes the most sense for you at your appointment.
What Can Botox Treat?
More than you probably think. The classics are forehead lines, the 11s (glabellar lines, if you want to impress someone at a dinner party), and crow's feet. But we also treat: Neck bands, gummy smiles, chin dimpling, jaw clenching, bunny lines, excessive sweating.
The versatility of neuromodulators is genuinely remarkable! When in doubt, ask us. It's one of our favorite conversations.
Does It Hurt?
It's a quick little pinch. The needles are tiny. Most people describe it as a slight sting that lasts about a second. It's faster than getting your eyebrows threaded and significantly less traumatic than a bikini wax. You're good!!
How Long Does It Take to Work and How Long Does It Last?
Botox is not instant. It takes 14 days to see your full result, so don't panic if you look in the mirror on day two and nothing looks different.
Results typically last 3–4 months. Your metabolism, activity level, muscle strength, and how consistently you treat all play a role. Patients who come in regularly often find their results last longer over time, the muscles learn to relax. We call this the “training effect” and it's one of the best reasons to stay consistent.
Will I Look Frozen?
This is the question we hear most often and we get it. We've all seen the frozen foreheads that look like a Zamboni could drive across it. That look is what some patients strive for and what some patients dislike. We can tailor results to your goals.
At The Luminary, our entire approach is conservative and natural. We want you to look refreshed, not redone. We want people to notice that you look great, not that you had something done. Less is more, always. We can always add; we can never take away. If you come in nervous about looking frozen, tell us. We will honor that.
Who's a Good Candidate?
Generally: adults who have dynamic wrinkles (lines that form with movement) and want to soften them. Botox is also incredibly powerful as a preventative tool, which is why we're seeing more patients in their mid-to-late 20s. Starting before lines etch in permanently means you may never have to deal with deep static wrinkles at all (!!) Prevention is always less expensive than correction.
You are NOT a candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain neuromuscular conditions, or have a known allergy to any ingredient. We cover all of this at your appointment.
What's the Difference Between Botox and Filler?
Botox relaxes muscle movement. Filler adds volume. Botox does nothing for volume loss, hollowness, or structural support. Filler does nothing for wrinkles caused by muscle movement. Many patients benefit from both, and we love building a treatment plan that addresses the full picture.
How Much Does It Cost?
At The Luminary, Botox is $13/unit. Members of The Glow Society get it at $11.70/unit. Your provider will walk you through exactly what they recommend before a single needle touches your face. No surprises at checkout. That's a promise.
What Should I Do Before My Appointment?
Skip blood thinners like ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil, and alcohol for 24–48 hours beforehand if you can, this reduces bruising risk. Come with a clean face.
What About After?
Don't rub, massage, or put pressure on treated areas for 4 hours. Skip intense workouts for the rest of that day. Hold off on facials or facial treatments for two weeks. Other than that? You're good to go. Most people walk right back into their day.
What If I Try It and I Hate It?
First, wait the full two weeks before you decide anything. A lot of patients feel a little "off" in the first week as things settle and that's completely normal. Second, Botox is temporary. If you genuinely don't love it, it wears off. You are not committed for life.
Third, come talk to us. We do complimentary two-week follow-up checks for exactly this reason. A good injector wants to know how you're feeling and will make it right.
The best thing you can do is book a consultation. Come in with your questions and your honest list of concerns. We love all of it. We're not here to talk you into anything, we're here to make sure whatever you decide is the right decision for you.
You've been thinking about this long enough. Come see us.
